Children's GF snacks

Sometimes the best gluten-free snacks for children are the simple ones that use fresh ingredients and do not take too much time to assemble.

There are some quick and easy snack ideas included in the 7-day children’s coeliac-friendly meal plan:

  • Sliced apples & carrots with peanut butter.
  • Nuts and raisin mix with fresh fruit.
  • GF crackers with cottage cheese & fruit chunks.
  • Salted popcorn - see recipe below

SALTED POPCORN

1 Tbsp olive oil

¼ cup corn kernels

Salt to taste

METHOD

Pour oil into a heavy-based saucepan with a lid. Warm over medium heat.

Add two corn kernels to use as a guide for oil temperature. When the corn kernels pop the oil is hot enough.

Remove from the heat and add remaining corn kernels.

Return the pan to the element and swirl the pan frequently to ensure the corn kernels cook evenly.

Once the kernels start to pop, tip the lid slightly to allow the steam to escape.

When kernels have stopped popping, remove them from the heat.

Sprinkle with salt and shake the pan with the lid on to distribute throughout the popcorn.

Taste the popcorn and add more salt if required.

Note: It is best to add a small amount of salt initially, taste then add more if required. It is easy to add salt but impossible to remove.

Alternative flavours include:

  • Cracked black pepper and salt
  • Melted butter
  • A sprinkle of paprika
  • A sprinkle of icing sugar
