Getting Creative

Whether you are celebrating the holidays or just looking for a fun activity to express your creativity, assembling and decorating a gingerbread house is the perfect way to spend your time.

Juliane Winter-Noakes from Yette Moosh shares her hassle-free method for making and decorating a traditional German inspired gingerbread house using the online pattern.

Biscuit Base

Follow the instructions on the baking mix package for ginger bread baking mix

*1 bag makes the house. If a base is required, two bags will be needed otherwise you can assemble the house on a platter or card board.

Royal Icing

500g icing sugar

2 Egg whites

1 tsp lemon juice

Beat egg whites until stiff, gradually add the sugar and lemon juice. Fill into piping bag with a small nozzle.

To assemble

Use a little icing to secure the front of the house on the base ( can be biscuit or card board). Put icing on the thin ends ( short side) of the walls and push gently together with the front panel. Do the same with the back panel. Let dry for 5-10 minutes.

Now generously ice all thin sides of the gable and top of walls, doing one side at a time. Let it rest a little before gently putting roof panel on top. If you notice some sliding of the roof panel, use one or two tooth picks to hold roof panel in place from underneath. Let one side dry ( 5-10 minutes) before repeating with the other side. Let house dry completely before decorating to you liking.

Gluten free pretzels, marshmallows,  lollies and chocolates are great ideas to use as decorations.
