Member event in Wellington

On Saturday, 19 July, Coeliac NZ held a local seminar for members in Wellington, with 28 attendees gathering to connect, learn, and share.

Attendees heard from Dr Angharad Dunn, a member of our Medical Advisory Panel, who provided valuable insights into coeliac disease from a GP’s perspective. She revisited signs, symptoms, and diagnostic tests, highlighting the different pathways people may take to receive a diagnosis. Her session reinforced the importance of recognising coeliac disease at every stage of the healthcare journey.

Dr Alistair Dunne, a Wellington GP diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2021, shared both personal and professional insights, including highlights from the upcoming 2025 Coeliac UK Research Conference. He spoke about a global shift in focus — from gluten-free living to the pursuit of a curative treatment, offering renewed hope for the coeliac community.

He discussed the case for population-based screening, referencing Italy’s 2024 pilot programme as evidence that it is the best way to detect silent cases. More countries are being encouraged to adopt this approach to their health system. Dr Dunne also discussed the potential of no-biopsy diagnosis, a model under development in the UK, noting the need for further validation to ensure clinical accuracy.

On the topic of mental health, he described the 'invisible backpack' many carry — the hidden burden of label-checking, food anxiety, and social stress — and highlighted the importance of support, resilience, and recognising the emotional impact of coeliac disease.

As the resident Dietitian and Health Promotion Manager, I delivered a quick-fire session on all things diet-related -  including food labelling laws, correct use of gluten-free claims on packaging, and how to confidently shop for naturally gluten-free foods. I also provided a brief update on Coeliac NZ’s work to improve gluten-free dining experiences, including the upcoming launch of the Gluten Free Food Safety masterclass for hospitality venues. Watch this space for how you, our members, can help spread the word and encourage your favourite cafés and restaurants to get involved!

The event provided a wonderful opportunity for members to come together, share stories, offer support, and simply be in a space where no explanation was needed  -  just mutual understanding and community.

A huge thank you to our Wellington volunteer for hosting us.
